Before and After of the Week

Service: Residential Organizing

Challenge:
The bedroom of a young boy was not functioning for his current needs or his growing needs.  Although he enjoyed sleeping in a tent, he really did need a bedroom that supported the storage of his clothes, toys, and extra linens.

Solution:
We designed a custom closet system that is a storage place for clothes, toys, and extra linens.  We also addressed the organizational and design issues for designing a closet for a child, which included adapting the space to be functional for his height.

Result:
Now the closet is a perfect, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space for a young child to get ready every morning.  Both the client and his son love the room!

Checklist: Pet-Sitter

July 25, 2011
If you’ve attended one of our webinars recently, you may have heard some adorable barking in the background.  Our team has taken in a tiny new member for the past few weeks, Lane.  She is a fluffy, happy Pomeranian dog that Innovatively Organized’s President, Elizabeth, has been pet-sitting.  Lane has enthusiastically joined all of our team meetings, taking turns in each team members’ laps.  And she greets us at the door with excitement every time we come to work.

She has a bin of toys to play with, which are usually put away.  The other day, Elizabeth came home to find toys scattered all over her home!  Lane has been the most difficult organizational client we have ever worked with, to say the least!  But she’s taken our hearts, nonetheless!

Inspired by Lane’s cuteness, we decided to create a Pet-sitter checklist for you to use when leaving town.  You can fill this form out with your contact information and all of your pet’s care instructions.  Your pet-sitter will be very grateful and your pet will be in good hands while you are away.

Get organized now with our Pet-sitter Checklist!

Article: Clear Clutter

Here’s a great article from Real Simple, “Smart Ways to Clear Clutter and Streamline Your Life.”  It’s full of great tips from readers, which we also recommend to our clients!  Here’s some ideas included in the article:

-  A woman from Seattle (so we already like her!) finds ten things in her home each week that she can either donate, throw away, or give to friends

-  5 minute rule: any task or project that can be finished in under five minutes should be done right away (we use the same rule of thumb but typically say emails that can be responded to in under two minutes should be done immediately, rather than saved for later)
-  Individual mesh laundry bags for each member of the house to put dirty socks in; the bags go in and out of the laundry, so no time is wasted pairing socks once clean

What are your thoughts?  Do you already do some of these tricks?  Do you have your own smart ways to clear clutter?

Are you planning a party, event, or wedding?  We found a fun, easy-to-use tool for managing your guest list, invitations, and seat arrangements!  SocialTables allows you to quickly create your guest list and send invitations online.  You can pull names, emails, and contact information from your email or Facebook account.  Once you send out invitations and the RSVPs come in, you can begin playing with your seating chart.  You just drag and drop pictures of your guests until you find the perfect arrangement.  Plus, you can invite others to help you plan the event!  This tool has received praise from The Washington Post and Real Simple; we think it could help you plan your next event with less stress and paper clutter.

Before and After of the Week

July 11, 2011
Service: Business Organizing

Challenge:
As the President and CEO of her company, this client had a lot on her plate.  She had sufficient workspace and storage space, but she wasn’t taking advantage of it because she didn’t have a clear workflow for her paper.  She was working with an assortment of organizing products that were not functioning for her, neither organizationally or aesthetically.

Solution:
We sorted through her paper piles and filing drawers, defining zones on her desktop that would allow her to easily process her paper.  We redefined and labeled her file system, and tackled the other organizational challenge in and around her office by providing her with the appropriate organizing products and tools.

Result:
Our client now has an office in which she can function at her best and be as productive as possible.  With her new zones (incoming, active projects, to-do items, and outgoing), she can easily find and file papers right away.

Quick Tips

When organizing your paper files, avoid labels like “miscellaneous” and “random.”  You’ll encounter difficulties finding them later.
Create a set of email policies for your small business so everyone’s on the same page when it comes to writing and sending emails.
Never plan every minute of your day – add buffer time to your day for the unexpected tasks that pop up.
Create a system for processing business cards you receive. Try delegating the data entry portion of the task to an assistant or intern.
IO has changed my whole perspective on being organized. You guys rock.Amy T., Blueflame Heating & Air Conditioning
When organizing your office, imagine a semi‐circle around you when you sit at your desk. Place the supplies you use most often inside this space so they will always be within reach when needed.
If you work from your car, set it up as a functional office with storage and office supplies like a desk.
Innovatively Organized’s Email Mgmt Webinar was great! My inbox is now down to zero for the first time in a long time. I would highly recommend it to any friends or associates!Dan F., Realtor
Use unexpected free time wisely – while waiting in line or sitting in traffic, have a list of things you can do then.
I can’t tell you how accomplished I feel today. Even when someone came to me with an “emergency” project, I noted that on my calendar. I know that I can use that information to help people better schedule time with me to get these projects done.Erin George, Real Change News
