How to Increase Productivity in Your Office Cubicle

October 28, 2010

Without a ceiling and a door to close, a cubicle workspace is easily invaded by noises and movement created by other people. Sometimes sitting in a cubicle seems like an open invitation for others to stop by to chat or ask questions. This can really affect your productivity in the office. An innovative and polite way to communicate to your coworkers that you don’t want to be disturbed is by using a CubeGuard.

This retractable message banner mounts across your cubicle entry (or office doorway) so your officemates know that you need uninterrupted time to focus on your work. This simple status tool installs in seconds and works in most office cubicles or entryways up to 50″ wide. Learn more about CubeGuard.

Purging the Pantry for an Organized Kitchen

October 21, 2010

Just like the refrigerator, the pantry needs to be evaluated and inventoried at least once a year. Start by emptying the shelves so you can see what you have and sort items into these categories:

  • Items used every day
  • Items used less frequently
  • Unopened items or items you no longer want (donate to charity)
  • Expired items to trash

Then take several minutes to wipe down shelves, sweep and vacuum. As you start to restock, place items such as baking supplies, breakfast items, and lunch items together. Heavier items like juice bottles, soda cans, or bulk items in boxes can go on bottom shelves. Consider using standard containers to store cereal and pasta. Glass or plastic cannisters allow you to see what you have and when you’re running low. If you have room, place a small folding step stool in the pantry to reach high shelves.

You can easily access the program from you desktop or mobile phone (they have an app for the program here), cross off and delete tasks as you complete them, or move tasks forward to complete later. TeuxDeux will also automatically carry forward tasks that you didn’t have the chance to complete that day, so you always have a consistent view of everything you need to do.

It seems like every store has a discount club or point system for shopping rewards - and it’s not easy keeping all those cards in your wallet! Using a dedicated key ring to avoid pulling out a stack of cards is a great way to keep them handy and organized. Many of these little plastic cards already come with a small hole or you can just use a standard hole-punch.

Organizing for a Good Cause

October 4, 2010

Last month, I was fortunate to be part of a group of 12 organizers from the Seattle chapter of NAPO who volunteered organizing services for the Puget Sound Area USO at their SeaTac Center. This Center provides the “comforts of home” and traveling assistance for military members and their families with a full nursery, children’s games, books, and toys; sleeping facilities, showers, free snack bar, comprehensive travel information and assistance, and a lounge area and library.

It was a way for all of us to give back and show support for our troops. The work of the USO Puget Sound relies on volunteer efforts to fill a 24-hour, Monday through Sunday schedule. For two days, we focused on organizing their storage rooms, laundry room, and business offices. It was extremely rewarding to give back to this organization, and it was especially memorable because the event occurred in time for Patriot Day, which honors those who were lost on 9/11.

Just because your email comes to your phone, you don’t need to respond immediately. Schedule specific times to check email.
For large, time-consuming tasks, break them down into smaller sub-tasks and spread them out over the day or week.
