TIP #52

Clear out any holiday decorations you didn't use this year by getting rid of them now.  Don't take up valuable space in your home by storing unused items for another year.

The One-In-One-Out Rule for Organizing Holiday Gifts

The presents are unwrapped, the eggnog is gone and the guests have finally left. So now what? Before you start counting down the days to December 31st, take a few moments to organize the gifts you received this season so you can welcome 2009 with a truly clean slate!

Before hanging up all your great new clothes, make sure you remove any old, ill-fitting or “never-going-to-wear-again” items first. Put aside all those pieces in a bag designated for donation, and encourage other friends and family members to add to the pile. For a recommendation of where to donate, check out the Donation Resources List.

Did you receive a shiny new vacuum to replace the one you’ve had since platform shoes were in style the first time around? Now you can get rid of that old one! Always purge first before adding a new item into your space, especially if it’s a duplicate.  For all those nifty gadgets you oohed and ahhed over, remember they also need batteries and a fresh charge before they can be used. If you received an electronic toy this season, then you may want to look into some unique charging stations that will keep all your new cords neat and tidy. Here is just one site that has some great charging station options.

Audit your bookcase, nightstand, or coffee table and recycle those outdated magazines or gather up the books that you know you won’t be reading again. Used books make great in-kind gifts to local senior centers or even the public library. If your shelves are full, you can’t make room for the new best-sellers you just received as gifts, so make sure to clear out those old novels before adding new treasures to your shelves.
